Academic Institutions and Disease Prevention

Academic institutions can take on a more active role in disease prevention for women by promoting awareness and education. Young adults often share a carefree attitude and feel a since of invincibility. An academic institution has the ability to promote necessary health and wellness information to young adults. Promoting health awareness will assist young women in living healthier and fuller lives. Making healthy choices begins at a young age and is critical in the battle of disease prevention. Academic institutions should encourage their students to form health interests groups that can inform others of the importance of healthy living. From my experience, young adults seem to listen to what their peers have to say versus the advice of a mature adult. Nonetheless, disease prevention is an important aspect of daily living and should begin at an early age in order to make a true difference.

  1. I respect colleges and universities that offer gym membership. For instance, colleges have begun to take initiative about health. UTA and Collin County have enforced a no smoking on campus rule. This allows people not to be subjected to second-hand smoke. It helps prevent cancer and other chronic diseases. I love the fact that TWU has boot camp and the indoor pool that allows students to get active and become fit.

  2. I agree that institutions need to start promoting health at a young age. We would not have to do as much damage control for college age and adult over weight women if we got them started earlier. Great health encourages great self esteem and motivation. There is no reason for us to wait until someone's metabolism has slowed to then show them how to take care of themselves.

  3. I totally agree! I do not think that many academic institutions have much to do with disease prevention. The only things I hear about on campus are HIV/AIDS prevention and breast cancer, nothing else. I think these institutions should prepare us for other disease as well. Then maybe we would all be healthier people. Great post!
